Elle Varner DailyYour ultimate source of Elle Varner

R&B songstress Elle Varner ended 2014 with a big “f*ck you” (well, actually a “F*ck It All”) and although it’s a new year, the charismatic singer is still keeping four letter words at the top of her vocabulary.

GlobalGrind caught up with Elle while she was gearing up to perform at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin. The “Dance” singer talked about preserving her sexy in an unsexy environment like SXSW, delivering herself from sadness, and finding the love within. Surprisingly, Elle has changed the concept of her album 4 Letter Word and revealed that actress Taraji P. Henson, aka “Cookie” from FOX’s hit series Empire, may appear on the record.

Elle’s forthcoming 4 Letter Word is due out later on this year. Watch our exclusive interview with her:

Heartbreak is all too familiar to Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Elle Varner, who went through a very public breakup that inspired her upcoming album, Four Letter Word. The key to moving on is moving past it, and Varner has done just that. She recently spoke to ESSENCE.com about how she survived such a brutal breakup and began to heal her heart.

ESSENCE: What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from heartbreak?
That you can love someone as much as you want and they can love you as much as they want but it doesn’t always mean that your relationship is going to work or that you’re right for each other. What I went through post break up was a sad time for me, kind of a darker time for me, but I had to go through that to really come back as a complete woman. It takes strength and it takes courage and that’s my message to all the women out there. Men too!

ESSENCE: How did you get your heart to heal after your breakup?
I really took that time to myself. It was a choice. I could go on the rebound, I could jump into something and put a Band-Aid on it or I could actually figure out what this means on a bigger scale and that has nothing to do with anyone else but me. So that was my choice. Sometimes we want to be in a relationship when we’re not really ready.

Things fall apart in the video for her Elle Varner’s anti-love song “Cold Case,” which she debuted in March. A couple starts out in love, but as time progresses, their relationship eventually crumbles. The R&B songstress does not appear in the four-minute clip, but she uses black-and-white imagery to convey her message.

In October, she dropped the emotional video for “Fuck It All,” while her sophomore album 4 Letter Word is due next year featuring production from Pop & Oak, Eric Hudson, Da Internz, and Hit-Boy.

“Every artist doesn’t have to be 17 years old pursuing their dream.”
by Liana Weston

In music, the phrase “one to watch” gets tossed around a lot. But these days, with so many new ways to consume songs and so many new songs to consume, what makes an artist actually worth listening to? In this weekly column, Teen Vogue’s resident A&R scout Liana Weston introduces you to up-and-comers who’ve got something to say both on and off their record. We’re not concerned with labels or throwing out descriptive niceties just to convince you that these artists are “the next big thing.” It’s in their music and in their own words, and all you need to do is lend a curious ear.

Each featured singer or band is matched with an amazing photographer who has generously donated their time to capture these eclectic acts, because they too believe in their potential. The ground rules for our subjects? Come as you are, no professional styling or makeup, and be ready for a raw black and white guerrilla-style shoot. The portrait is paired with an amateur snapshot shared from the depths of the musician’s phone. From pop to folk and R&B to rock, these artists (much like their photographs) are unfiltered, uncensored, and unfazed.
